Faucets, Sinks, and Hose Bibbs

Small drips can waste thousands of gallons of water annually with as much as 150 gallons a day being wasted!!!  Be sure to check under sinks for moisture or small leaks. Repair leaky faucets as soon as possible to avoid paying for wasted water and also to avoid water damage to your fixtures and pipes. Water leaking under cabinets can create corrosion on pipes and damage to wood/molding. The cost to repair leaking piping is minimal compared to the cost of replacing damaged wood and cabinets!

Over time metal water lines will build up rust and mineral deposits. This is especially evident in older homes. Debris can also build up in water lines over time. Remove and clean your faucet aerators annually to ensure an even flow of water.

Make sure overflow holes on tubs and vanities are clear and open to prevent water damage to floors and ceilings. These overflows will help keep tubs and sinks from overflowing onto the floor.

Summer Fun

With the summer here, home activities are buzzing. We always seem to accumulate more dirty clothes during these summer months. It may be time to check your washer hoses and connections for leaks, bulges or cracks. Also check your dryer vents for lint build-up.

Be careful with what is put down your disposal. Many popular cookout style foods can harm them such as cornhusks, banana peels, and other stringy foods. Do not put fats or cooking oils down your drains as this can cause build up in the drain pipes and cause a clog.

If you go on vacation you may want to turn off your water heaters power source and water source as this will save you from heating water while you are away and stop the chances of the water heater having a leak while you are gone.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless Water Heater

When talking about tankless water heaters many questions come up and hopefully I will be able to answer some of these questions. I will try to keep it simple.I will be adding more information to the article as questions are asked so if you having any questions please let us know so that they can be answered and added so others like yourself may find out easily. Thank you!

Does a tankless water heater give instant hot water?

No, a tankless hot water heater does not produce instant hot water. In this regard a tankless is like a traditional hot water heater without the tank. When a fixture or faucet is opened a demand for water is needed. This need of water activates the tankless water heater to turn on producing the temperature of water that is set by the heater. The water is then heated to the temperature and will stay at that temperature until the demand for water is shut off.

The time that hot water takes to get to the fixture will depend on how far the fixture is away from the heater. The time is usually around 30 seconds but could take up to a minute. This leads up to the next question.

Can I use a recirculating pump on my tankless water heater?

The answer to this question is no. The tankless water heater has to sense the demand of water to actuate. Recirculating pumps sense the temperature of the hot water and turns on to circulate the water.  This can cause issues with the tankless water heater which will cause the heater to either work all the time, not at all, or cause malfunctions.

Types and brands of tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters come in different types: propane (LP), natural gas, and electric. The prices vary between the types and brands. The main brands that we install are Rheem/Rhuud, Stiebel, Rinnai, and others. I have included links to these companies below so that you may see some of their products and specifications.

A Rinnai tankless water heater only heats water when you need it. So you get an endless source of hot water, while also saving money on energy costs by not heating and reheating the same tank of water.
